Stimulants For Hypersomnia

Often a doctor will prescribe prescription drugs help aid in the battle with hypersomnia and especially cataplexy. It is important to note that this is no “cure” because there is no such thing for the lot. Stimulants are addictive and often dangerous and they should not be taken all the time.

Some of the popular stimulants to treat this condition are methylphenidate, and modafinil. These are the most popular because they are mild stimulants that don’t have serious addictive nature. People with hypersomnia and cataplexy want stimulants to keep them awake but not “jittery” so these are excellent options. Amphetemines may also be prescribed in certain cases of cataplexy and idiopathic hypersomnia. These are not great options because of their extreme addictive properties but commonly this is a powerful stimulant that is need to help treat the condition.

Of course there are over the counter drugs that can aid in the treatment of hypersomnia. Caffeine is the obvious one but it has the downfall of losing its effectiveness because the tolerance build up. Herbal stimulants are another good option for those wishing to treat naturally. Yohimbine is a great stimulant which is often used in weightloss pills that is a bark extract.

Individuals with hypersomnia and cataplexy also have the option to go with naturally occuring amino acids. These are great options because of how they work. The energy shots out on the market utilize these amino acids which help provide energy and alertness. People with hypersomnia can benefit because it supplies a good “clean” energy that last for a while. Idiopathic hypersomniacs and individuals with cataplexy may need a more substantial stimulant however.
